In the beginning was the Word, And the Word was with God, And the Word was God Gospel of St John
The modern term 'gospel' derives from the Old English 'godspel' meaning the recital ('spel') of the good which unites ('god' derives from the Germanic 'to unite'). The wisdom that is communicated to us through the words of a Gospel serves to unite us with God. The wisdom comes to us from God and is God. A written Gospel is part of the manifestation in this, the physical world, of the Word. In a very, very minute way, it becomes part of the Word made flesh and as such participates in the body of Christ.
