Illuminated Manuscripts and Contemporary Calligraphy

The illuminated prayers and verse on this page are all originals, by artist Diane George. They are designed from scratch, based upon the principles of sacred art and sacred geometry. Most of the paintings are executed in handmade egg tempera, lamp black or iron gall ink and gilded using genuine gold leaf. The paintings are on pergamenata paper, traditional gesso, wood panels or genuine calfskin manuscript vellum. Please contact me to enquire about any of the paintings or to arrange a commission. Priced from £150.

Metal leaf, acrylic and watercolour on museum board. There are two separate texts here, one is from the Bible and one is from the Qu'ran.

 Revelations 1:8

I Am

The text opens with “I am”. The red and blue key pattern forms the “i”, and the “m” is nested within the “a’. Key patterns are a protective and warding device, being based upon the idea of the labyrinth. They also represent a journey, more spiritual than physical. The cross at the base of the “i” is formed of a square within a circle: heaven and earth united. The cross is surrounded by four vesicas - symbolic of christ. The triskeles to the left of the design represent turning, rotation and the cyclical nature of life. Framed size 17 x 22 in.
