Calligraphy

Quite some time ago now, possibly in another century, I saw a page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. My reaction was “Wow!”. I needed to know how to create pages like that. After much trial and even more error, I think I’m beginning to get it sussed. The Celtic Gallery contains some of my available works. The Gospel of Thomas Gallery contains slides and information on my 2002-4 illuminated manuscript of the Gospel.

So why the Arabic style works? Well, I had never really looked at Arabic calligraphy until I embarked upon an MA in Traditional Art. The grace and beauty of the scripts amazed me. I wondered whether the forms and style of the Arabic scripts could be adapted to English. They make a good contrast to the complexity of the Celtic works, but they still take a long time to do! All that empty space to balance……
